Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment: Dates, Deadlines, and How to Enroll

Open Enrollment is the one window each year when anyone can sign up for, switch, or drop an ACA marketplace plan — no qualifying event required. Missing it usually means waiting until next year, so here's exactly what to know.

When is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment runs November 1 through January 15 annually for marketplace plans in most states. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. Enroll between December 16 and January 15 for coverage that starts February 1. A handful of state-run exchanges set slightly different deadlines — your Marketplace Hubs agent will confirm yours.

What you can do during Open Enrollment

  • Enroll in marketplace coverage for the first time
  • Switch from one ACA plan to another
  • Add or drop dependents
  • Re-apply for premium tax credits and CSR subsidies based on next year's expected income
  • Drop your marketplace plan entirely

What you'll need to enroll

  • Date of birth and Social Security number for every household member applying
  • Expected household income for the coverage year
  • Information about any current health coverage
  • Immigration document numbers (if applicable)
  • Preferred doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions so we can check networks and formularies

What happens if you miss Open Enrollment?

If you don't enroll by January 15 and you don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you'll generally have to wait until the next Open Enrollment to get a marketplace plan. Medicaid and CHIP are available year-round if you qualify by income. Short-term and off-exchange plans exist outside the marketplace but don't offer the same protections or subsidies.
